Manabiya is a website for studying Japanese. This page says what it stores about you, why, and who else sees any of it.
What we store
- Your account: your email address, the name you chose, and a scrambled (hashed) form of your password. We never store the password itself, and we do not send you emails.
- If you sign in with Google: your Google account ID and email address, which Google gives us when you agree on its sign-in screen. We get nothing else from your Google account.
- Your studying: which lessons you opened, read, watched and listened to, your quiz and review results (including the answers you got wrong), your daily plan and settings, with dates.
- Sign-in sessions: a random sign-in code for each browser and app you use (kept in one cookie, or by the Windows app on your computer) and a short description of the browser or app.
Why
Only to let you sign in, keep your progress on every device and plan your reviews. There are no ads, no tracking of you and no selling of data.
Counting visits
Visits to the site are counted with GoatCounter, without cookies: it records which page was opened (the welcome page, a lesson, Today, and so on; never your answers, progress or account), which link to another site was clicked, the site you came from, your browser, screen size and country. It keeps no personal data, and the counts cannot tell who anyone is. The Android app counts no visits.
Who else gets anything
- Signing in with Google goes through Google.
- GoatCounter counts the visits (above); it gets nothing about your account or your studying.
Each of them handles the data under its own privacy policy. Nobody else gets your data.
The apps
The Android app shows this website and stores the same as it does. If you sign in with Google there, the phone’s Google account confirms who you are, and we get the same as on the website. The Windows app keeps its lessons and your progress on your computer; when you sign it in to your account, it sends your progress here and receives what you studied elsewhere, so that every device shows the same.
Cookies
One cookie, which keeps you signed in. No other cookies, and nothing for advertising; visits are counted without cookies.
How long, and deleting it
Until you delete your account. In Settings → Account you can download everything stored about you as a file, and delete the account, which removes it and all your progress at once (how).
